So I landed a colony ship and I got an outpost, anyone know why?

Are you sure its an outpost? Check closer! If you have at least 1 mil population, you got a colony.
One thing I haven't tested is landing a colony on a rock or fire planet, but every other planet that has a rid bit of terraforming will keep grooving your population....
You should see a first factory pop up at 100 mil population (which takes about a day).

'twas a fire planet, maybe the pop died and it became an outpost.

It seems that max population for a colony is 5m times terraform level. So Terran planets, with terraform level 80, have a max population of 400m. A lava planet has a base terraform level of zero so max population would also be zero. I suspect you would need to terraform a lava planet before it could sustain any population. I'm interested to know. If you go to your planet list, does the planet appear in your colonies tab or your outposts tab?

I dropped 3 colonies on some planet before I understood why they were all dying.
